Enhancing skills and increasing confidence for serving gender diverse populations

The Equitas Health Institute collaborates with Sinclair Community College to hold the Greater Dayton Transgender Mental Health Summit every other year. The day-long summit aims to enhance skills and increase confidence for serving gender diverse populations.

The next Greater Dayton Transgender Mental Health Summit will be held in the spring of 2021.

Summit Objectives:

  • Discuss recent academic research for serving the mental health needs of transgender and gender diverse populations.
  • Identify common needs of caregivers/guardians of transgender youth and ways to support the family.
  • Enhance skills and increase confidence for providing mental health services to the transgender and gender diverse communities.
  • Connect mental health and social service providers with resources for serving transgender and gender diverse populations.

The 2019 Summit featured a keynote address by Ashton Colby, a social entrepreneur, certified yoga teacher, YouTuber and writer from Columbus, Ohio.  Asthon began his gender transition in 2012 and has since become a spiritual bridge-builder reimagining the traditional media narratives of what it means to be transgender.

His story and YouTube channel, “Beyond the Body,” have been featured on People.comToday.com and many other media outlets.  Ashton speaks on not just the physical, but the mental, emotional, and spiritual changes one must undergo to not simply transition but thrive.
